Acts 17:23- For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship–and this is what I am going to proclaim to you..
Is it possible to serve and believe in an unknown, strange and distant deity or object of worship? Could one really like those in Athens be worshipping a god that is not the true God? Yes, it is only a saving knowledge that leads to true worship. An avid reader may possess an intellectual knowledge of great poets, artists, and scientists. You may also claim to have some sort of knowledge about your roommate, sibling, best friend. But there is an experiential knowledge that leads to intimate personal worship of God, which progresses to a deeper level of knowing.
The Triune God desires that we know Him intimately hence John the beloved apostle of Christ said “This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent(Jn 17 :3). Christ said I and my Father are one (Jn10:30; 14:8-9). Paul circumcised on the eighth day, an Israelite, a Hebrew, and a Pharisee had an intellectual knowledge of God (Phil3:5). However, after a saving knowledge on Damascus road(Acts Ch 9), Paul still earnestly yearned for a deeper intimate experience in the knowledge of the Holy God (Phil 3:10). Do you have only a head knowledge of Him? Could you be worshiping a god you are ignorant of?
Do you desire a revelation of the true God? God revealed Himself to the Ethiopian Eunuch through His word using Philip(Acts 8:26-40), and to the scholars in Athens using Paul. The Holy Spirit will show you the way and send someone as you humble yourself in prayer.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, I want to know you. Open my inner eyes of understanding and reveal yourself to me. I truly desire a saving and growing intimacy in my knowledge of you. So that I can be a true worshiper in spirit and in truth. In Jesus’ name I pray.
